The third annual Walk for Awareness fashion show featured performances to support LGBT History Month.
The “We Are 1″ student group organized the event Thursday in the Student Union Building multipurpose room.
The event was designed to convey the message that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people should not be the subject of discrimination because of who they are.
Along with We Are 1, the dance team ONYX and the All or Nothing Drill Team were performers at the show. Marshayla Kinsel and Hakeem Divers, Lincoln alumni from the class of 2013, were this year’s hosts.
“The Walk of Awareness was basically about giving awareness to LGBT month,” Kinsel said. “A lot of people on campus don’t know that it’s just not about breast cancer awareness this month. My favorite part of the show was when the drill team, All or Nothing, came out, and when ONYX was dancing. Even though their music stopped they kept right on going and started over again when it came back on.”
The fashion at the show ranged from all black leather and spandex ensembles to shiny sequins and glitter. Runway performances by men and women included fierce walks and choreographed dance routines, all in 6-inch heels.
“I think it’s cool that the school is supporting their students, no matter what their sexual preferences are,” said freshman Alea Binder.
