Discussion of health, leadership highlight Legacy Lecture

On March 21 Lincoln held a convocation for the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation Inc.’s 2013 Legacy Lecture Series at the International Cultural Center. The theme for the event was “Educating Student Leaders to be Healthy, wealthy and Wise.”

The convocation was hosted by BET’s Jeff Johnson along with panelists that were business professionals and entrepreneurs informing students about leadership, professionalism, and personal health.

“We want to get Black students to learn through self-empowerment now not later and get them up to date with current state of affairs,” stated by Thomas Dortch, Jr., chairman of the Hall of Fame Foundation.

The Hall of Fame Foundation is an organization focusing on development and growth of HBCUs and their students with training and internships. Hall of Fame Foundation also has scholarships for high school students planning to attend an HBCU. Their main focus is to preserve the accomplishments of HBCUs and educate general public on their accomplishments.

Students were able to actively participate in the lecture and ask panelists questions pertaining to careers, student empowerment, and physical health.

“Panelists answers to student questions were very informative and positive. Panelists offered great information and stressed the importance of networking,” stated by Ralph Simpson, Director of Career Services.

Cash prizes were awarded to students and student organizations that attended the convocation. Book vouchers of $250 were given to students from alumni with winning raffles and a $500 prize was given to the student organization with the most attendees.

Legacy lectures will continue to travel to other HBCU’s in following weeks and has continued to do for the last 8 years.
