Alphas gearing up for Miss Black and Gold

By Tamia Davis

Twenty girls packed a Dickey Hall classroom Wednesday with one thing on their minds –  becoming Lincoln University’s next Miss Black & Gold

The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. hosted an informational session for its annual Miss Black & Gold Pageant.

The informational was held at 7 p.m. January 30.

Nanakofi Dadson, member of Alpha Phi Alpha, opened the event expressing what they are looking for out of contestants.

“We are looking for a Queen on our campus to represent us, the men of Alpha Phi Alpha.”

Three members of the past and recent Black & Gold Royal Court presented their introductions from the pageant. Of those were 2011-2012’s Miss Gold Uzo Amaka, the current Miss Black, Erin Young, and Miss Black & Gold, Wasaba Sidabay.

“I think that the girls will be able to find themselves and realize they can do things that they never thought they would be able to do after this pageant,” says Sidabay.

The Miss Black and Gold Pageant, under the sponsorship of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is an outgrowth of the long tradition of the organization’s designation of outstanding young ladies to serve as Chapter Queens. The Fraternity recognizes the valuable support rendered to it by the many friends of Alpha Phi Alpha and this endeavor serves as one mechanism to applaud such support.

The contestants will be judged on seven different areas:  scholarship, interview, opening fanfare, swimwear, talent, evening gown, and question and answering.

The winner will go on to compete in a national pageant, crowning Miss Alpha Phi Alpha.

The pageant will be held March 7, 2013 at 7:06 in the Student Union Building.
